What Is Vision Therapy?

Vision Therapy is a personalised programme designed to improve specific visual skills and the way the eyes work together. It uses structured exercises and activities to support areas such as eye coordination, focusing, tracking and binocular vision. Following a detailed assessment, your orthoptist will determine whether Vision Therapy is appropriate for you or your child and create a programme tailored to your individual needs.

Who May Benefit From Vision Therapy?

Vision Therapy may be recommended for children, teenagers or adults who experience difficulties with eye coordination, focusing, tracking or using both eyes together. It may also be considered when visual difficulties are affecting activities such as reading, learning, working or other everyday tasks. A comprehensive assessment is important to determine whether Vision Therapy is suitable for your individual needs.

How Does a Vision Therapy Course Work?

A Vision Therapy course is personalised to your individual visual needs and may include:

  • Initial assessment: A detailed assessment of your eye movements, focusing, coordination and binocular vision.

  • Personalised treatment plan: A programme designed around your assessment results, visual needs and treatment goals.

  • Structured therapy sessions: Guided exercises and activities designed to improve specific visual skills.

  • Home exercises: Where appropriate, exercises may be recommended between appointments to support your progress.

  • Regular progress reviews: Your visual skills and response to treatment are monitored throughout the programme.

  • Treatment adjustments: Exercises and activities may be adapted as your visual abilities develop

Your Vision Therapy Assessment & Treatment

Your journey begins with a comprehensive assessment of your visual function. This may include evaluating eye movements, focusing ability, eye coordination and how well the two eyes work together. Based on the findings, your orthoptist will explain whether Vision Therapy is appropriate and discuss a personalised treatment plan. Treatment sessions are then structured around your specific visual needs and monitored throughout your programme.
